Parkinson Boxing is a modified, non-contact form of boxing for people with Parkinson's disease/atypical parkinsonism. It utilizes punching bags and pads, and training sessions are professionally supervised by a combination of boxing trainers and (geriatric) physical therapists who work daily with the target group.
The classes always include a warm-up and cool-down, and boxing is alternated with other exercises, designed as, for example, dual-task, circuit, or station training. The goal is to combat Parkinson's, be active, and experience the joy of movement. The classes are varied, adapted to everyone's own level, and there is room for social interaction.
The training sessions result in an improvement in balance, strength, endurance, coordination, flexibility, and cognitive functions such as reaction time and focus. Additionally, scientific research shows that Parkinson's boxing can slow disease progression, increase quality of life, and has emotional benefits (such as improved mood and stress reduction).
