More than a quarter of the Dutch had mental health issues in the past year. For close associates such as partners, parents, children and family members, it can be tough to watch a loved one struggle. How can you offer help to someone who has built a wall around them, who resists or seems to speak a different language? How can you support your loved one without losing it yourself?
Caring for a loved one involves many emotions. Sadness, powerlessness, lack of understanding, loneliness, shame or anger. The complexity and unpredictability of mental health problems makes it difficult for many loved ones to respond appropriately to their loved one's behavior. Finding the right help can also be difficult: the healthcare system is complicated, waiting lists are long. You can feel like you're on your own. And in addition to your care responsibilities, you may also have your job or education, a family to support, and your own social life. Not surprisingly, many caregivers feel overburdened.
Of great importance that you also continue to take good care of yourself in this difficult situation. But how do you do that? That's what we will discuss during the webinar ‘Caring for and around your neighbor.
